Since plant operations resumed in 2010, cylinder repairs have presented a challenge due to a shortage of skilled labor and the workload at the Mechanical Shop.

To manage this, the DEM department initially outsourced cylinder repairs for crust breakers and ECL cranes. However, under the guidance of a training instructor and the Assistant Manager of the Mechanical Shop, the DEM department has begun in-house repairs of crust breaker cylinders and pallet carriers with the help of DEM trainees, as part of the SII programme.

This initiative has led to significant cost savings for the plant and provided valuable hands-on training for trainees, exposing them to real-world field maintenance conditions. The process also boosts trainees' confidence, an essential quality in maintenance roles, and ensures high-quality repairs under the oversight of experienced supervisors.
